India brides get wooden paddles to beat drunk husbands

An Indian state minister has given hundreds of wooden bats to newly-wed brides, urging them to use the paddle as a weapon if their husbands turn alcoholic or abusive.Gopal Bhargava gave the bats — which are used to get dirt out of clothes in traditional laundries — to nearly 700 brides at a mass wedding organised by the government of central Madhya Pradesh state on Saturday.

The nearly foot-long paddles are emblazoned with messages that read: “For beating drunkards” and “Police won’t intervene”.

Bhargava told the brides to reason with their husbands first, adding that they should “let the wooden paddles do the talking” if their spouses refuse to listen.

Bhargava told AFP he wanted to draw attention to the plight of rural women who face domestic abuse from their alcoholic husbands.

“Women say whenever their husbands get drunk they become violent. Their savings are taken away and splurged on liquor,” he said.

“There is no intent to provoke women or instigate them to violence but the bat is to prevent violence.”

Breaking: 400 Fulani across Nigeria convert to Christianity

Breaking: 400 Fulani across Nigeria convert to Christianity

Not less than 400 Fulani Christian converts have been tasked on preaching the gospel of peace to their kindred in order to reduce the prevailing crises in the country.

Rev. Copper Sebok, Reverend in charge of COCIN Church Panyam, gave the charge on Sunday at the end of a 3-day conference organised for all Fulani converts of all denominations across the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference was aimed at awakening the need for preaching peace to their fellow brothers and sisters across the country.
“The conference is also a re-union service for all Fulani converts regardless of their denominations and to share experiences and encourage one another in the propagation of the gospel of peace.
“It is a concept of COCIN 43 years ago, and to debunk the notion that Fulani’s are nomadic and can’t be reached with the gospel of Christ.’’
In his sermon, read from Matt 9: 35-38, the clergy said man must have compassion on the unsaved to draw them to Christ for eternal salvation.
He decried the level of crises in Nigeria which usually resulted to loss of lives and property, adding that Nigerians must embrace peace for the progress and development of the nation.
Rev. Hassan Mohammed, who spoke on behalf of the converts, expressed gratitude to God for giving them a new lease of life as Christians. He disclosed that the conference was an eye opener for them to go and proclaim the gospel not only to their kindred but to all nations.
“We have a total of seven Fulani people ordained Reverends beside other Pastors and Evangelists and we are doing our best to enlighten our brothers and sisters about Christianity,’’ Mohammed said. He thanked the organizers of the conference and appealed to both Christians and Muslim to continue to pray for the peace of the country.

‘Biafra is for the Igbo….I am a Biafran’, says Iwuanyanwu

'Biafra is for the Igbo....I am a Biafran', says Iwuanyanwu

Against the background of prosecution of the leaders of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, publisher of Champion newspapers, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu has said that he belongs to Biafra and that he remains a Biafran as an Igboman.

Iwuanyanwu who was reacting to the recent release of Kanu from prison detention said was wrong, in the first place, to level treason charges against Kanu, noting that what Kanu has been doing mere expression of public opinion, which he said is no act of offence let along an act of treason.

The former Presidential candidate made the statements at Amokwe in Udi local government area of Enugu state when he paid condolence visit to the family of late political scientist, Prof. Godwin Odenigwe. He noted that Odenigwe would be remembered for bringing about traditional rulers stool in communities of Igboland and for pioneering the creation of the local government system as third tier of government.

On Nnamadi kanu and Biafra agitation, Iwuanyanwu said: “I have always said that was no reason detaining Nnamdi Kanu. In the law of this country which I know unless you have arms. Nnamdi Kanu didn’t commit any treason. Treason is when you take up arms against the government, he didn’t take up any arms, there was no reason whatsoever for detaining him, because everybody have the right to say I want Biafra, everybody have the right to say I want Biafra. For God’s sake, I’ve made it clear to people that Biafra is for the Igbo. Hausas are Arewas, Yorubas are Oduduwas and we are Biafrans.

“There is a problem we have because Biafra fought a war and people are ashamed to say they are Biafrans but I am not afraid to say I am a Biafran. Biafra is part of Nigeria, Arewa is part of Nigeria, Oduduwa is part of Nigeria; all of us are there. “If a person from Odududuwa takes up arms to secede from Nigeria, its treason but if one is just saying by words of mouth, it just an ordinary expression of public opinion. There is no law that makes such a person get convicted by just saying we want to secede, it’s a right of expression.

“But if somebody from Oduduwa is amassing arms to topple the government to secede, its treason. If somebody from Arewa is amassing arms to topple the government, its treason, if somebody from Biafra, because all of us are from Biafra I am from Biafra, to topple government, its treason.

“But if I come and say I want Biafra, it’s no offence. To the best of my knowledge Kanu didn’t have any violent means; all he said was that he wanted Biafra. He shouldn’t have been detained in the first place, I said it long ago. I said the government is making him a hero but people misquoted me and said I said government should jail him.

“No, I said that getting an innocent person, putting him in prison, they are making him a hero. So what Nnamdi Kanu is now is a hero because of all these. So he has not committed any offence and shouldn’t have been in detention in the first place.

“But there are also some parts of Igbo, who since after the war, they don’t want to talk about Biafra. You cannot wish away Biafra, Biafra is there just like you can’t wish away Oduduwa or Arewa.
